Let's Define Wellness
First, let us examine the concept of wellness, the state of being we all should seek; the level of functioning our Creator desires for us. Some, like this writer, define wellness as an interactive flow of energy among the subsystems of the human existence known as the mind/body/spirit. Or a process of moving toward fitness, positive nutrition, positive relationships, stress management, clear life purpose, consistent belief systems, commitment to self-care, and environmental sensitivity/comfort. Others see it as a quality of life that is relatively free of disease. Still, others who possess a deep sense of spiritual connectedness with God, explain wellness as existing in God's favor, obeying His principles of living, and trusting in His direction.

To define wellness for clarity of meaning we are aware that it is relative to the quality of life individuals may optimally obtain based on the existence of familial, hereditary, genetic, and environmental factors in their lives.

As science continues to probe the "mysteries" of life, we are learning that humans, like animals, are infinitely adaptable to changes from the normal expectations of biochemical activity. Those who have been seen as "abnormal" may have vast capabilities to cope and thrive among those seen as "normal." They may have reached a plateau of function in a state of human optimism that gives them advantage over others with "good health."

Wellness has taken on popularity as a strategy for describing the absence of disease and optimization of quality of life. It elicits positive responses and depicts a reachable goal for every individual. Wellness theory unites all who seek effective ways to promote health and prevent disease.
