LIVING WELL: Nutrition and Weight Management

With the rising concern of health professionals and the public of the increasing size and weight of 60% of Americans (and alarming similar data in other developed countries), RBL desires to share important resources for intervention and communication about health strategies to prevent obesity and the resulting preventable disease and disability costs to individuals and the healthcare industry.

In the U.S. the goal of Healthy People 2010 is to reduce the rate to 15%. Because of a growing economy, higher demand for foods and meals that are quick, social occasions centered around food, larger servings in restauants, poor and irregular eating habits, and emotional attachments to oral gratification, and in some cases genetic propensity, the incidence and prevalence of overweight and obese citizens is worsening.

Overweight is defined as 25-29.9 BMI; obesity is 30+ BMI (Body Mass Index). BMI can be calculated like this (English formula with pounds and inches):

BMI = ( Weight in Pounds/ (Height in inches) X (Height in Inches) X 703. You may calculate yours at the CDC website. Go to www.cdc.gov and type "BMI calculator" in the search box.

Besides formulating a personal weight management and physical activity plan and consulting with your primary care provider, Americans may advocate for community planning and implementation that facilitates and encourages group activities and resources to control weight and improve health.

Adult Behaviors that Promote Obesity - What We Can Do About it?

Correct information and its simple distribution is the first line of approach. A brochure is inexpensive, small, and attractive and can be passed on to friends or family or distributed to larger groups. Learning all we can about our body's needs nutritionally and fitness-wise (Refer to HealthyLinks Directory) and including weight control measures in our daily and life management plans are fundamental steps.

Pharmaceutical-grade Essential Vitamins & Minerals

At a time when individuals suffering chronic disease or nutritional deficits are experiencing dramatic positive results with supplement therapy, studies emerge to discredit this approach to supporting nutritional interventions. What the consumer needs is assurance that their vitamins and minerals are appropirate for their need and the expectation of laboratory-tested quality. USANA, a Fortune 500 company, has the edge on quality. Explore their website and read the latest health facts.

Obesity Among Children - Future Predictions, Current Possibilities

It begins in the highchair. Actually, health and health behaviors begin with conception.
"If a child is fed when he is hungry, played with when he needs attention, and encouraged to be active when he is restless, he is not likely to grow up inhibited and passive or overstuffed and helpless, unable to control his eating because every discomfort is misinterpreted as a need to eat".
